Robust multidimensional welfare comparisons : one vector of weights , one vote ∗
نویسنده
چکیده
Many aspects of social welfare are intrinsically multidimensional. Composite indices attempting to reduce this complexity to a unique measure abound in many areas of economics and public policy. Comparisons based on such measures depend, sometimes critically, on how the different dimensions of performance are weighted. Thus, a policy maker maker may wish to take into account imprecision over composite index weights in a systematic manner. In this paper, such weight imprecision is parameterized via the -contamination framework of Bayesian statistics. Subsequently, combining results from polyhedral geometry, social choice, and theoretical computer science, an analytical procedure is presented that yields a provably robust ranking of the relevant alternatives in the presence of weight imprecision. The main idea is to consider a vector of weights as a voter and a continuum of weights as an electorate. The procedure is illustrated on recent versions of the Rule of Law and Human Development indices.

Equal representation in two-tier voting systems
The paper investigates how voting weights should be assigned to differently sized constituencies of an assembly. The one-person, one-vote principle is interpreted as calling for a priori equal indirect influence on decisions. The latter are elements of a one-dimen sional convex policy space and may result from strategic behavior consistent with the median voter theorem. Numerous artificial cons...
متن کاملAn Electronic Voting System Supporting VoteWeights
Typically each voter contributes with one vote for an election. But there are some elections where voters can have different weights associated with their vote. In this paper we provide a solution for allowing an arbitrary number of weights and weight values to be used in an electronic voting system. We chose REVS, Robust Electronic Voting System, a voting system designed to support Internet vo...
متن کاملTesting for stochastic dominance among additive, multivariate welfare functions with discrete variables1
Aourishing literature on robustness in multidimensional welfare and poverty comparisons has aroused the interest on multidimensional stochastic dominance. By generalizing the dominance conditions of Atkinson and Bourguignon (1982) this paper o¤ers complete conditions, alternative to those proposed by Duclos et al. (2006a,b). We also show how to test these conditions for discrete variables exte...
متن کاملExtreme voting under proportional representation: the multidimensional case
We study the strategic behavior of voters in a spatial model of proportional representation, in which the policy space is multidimensional. Our main finding is that in large electorate, under some assumptions on voters’ preferences, voters essentially vote, in any equilibrium, only for the extreme parties.

TThe uncertainty estimation and compensation are challenging problems for the robust control of robot manipulators which are complex systems. This paper presents a novel decentralized model-free robust controller for electrically driven robot manipulators. As a novelty, the proposed controller employs a simple Gaussian Radial-Basis-Function Network as an uncertainty estimator. The proposed netw...
